The American citizen Harvey Alexander Johnson, 57, was sentenced by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to one year in prison for indecent acts with three girls between 13 and 14 years of age. In addition, he must pay $962 compensation to one of the victims, the only one who brought charges against him.
Johnson was arrested in August 2009, in the area of Boeing Kak, after the Protect team submitted the testimony of 10 girls, who accused the American of sexual abuse during English classes taught by him.
The accused pleaded not guilty, saying he had merely touched the girls, as might any teacher would with his students.
Concerning the compensation to be paid by Johnson, his lawyer said his client has no money because he is "a poor man." Johnson has resided in Cambodia for several years, following an invitation from a friend to give classes to children from poor families. Protect’s team began its investigation in mid 2007, when the American was seen playing inappropriately with minors. Protect warned police about their suspicions so they can monitor his actions.
Seila Samleang, director of Protect in Cambodia, said the levity of the sentence is due in part to the fact that he will be deported to the U.S. after serving his sentence.
