The Court of Appeals extended the sentence of Michel Roger Blanchard from one year in prison to a year and seven months, for having committed indecent acts with an 8-year-old boy in the Cambodian Province of Sihanouk Preah.
The Frenchman, 44, was arrested on August 2008 for having committed "indecent acts" with five boys between the ages of 8 and 15 years. In the case of the boy involved in formal charges brought against Blanchard, he has been sentenced to a year in prison and must pay compensation of 50 dollars. The Sihanoukville District Attorney appealed the sentence because it was excessively mild. Blanchard remains in custody until his appeal.
Protect's lawyer proclaimed his disapproval of the result from the appeal, which should have included the deportation of Blanchard to France. When the Frenchman completes his sentence, he should have to serve 5 years of supervised probation in Cambodia.
The case is aggravating the health of the boy's mother, having taken an alleged bribe of $3000 from Blanchard to withdraw the complaint. The boy and his two brothers remain in protective custody with a local NGO.
