Seven months given to J.M. Charlot for solicitation of child prostitution

French citizen J.M. Charlot, 63, has been convicted of soliciting child prostitution and sentenced to three years in prison. Although he will only have to serve 7 months.

Charlot was arrested in August 2009, at a hotel in the town of Srak Chork while with a 16-year-old girl. He was remanded during the court proceedings, until February 25, after the trial in Phonm Penh was complete.

Also, the French citizen must pay compensation of 1 million riel (about $232) to the victim. Charlot testified in court that he did not know the age of the minor, since according to him, she claimed to be of age. After completing his sentence, Charlot will be banished from Cambodia.

The Director of Protect Cambodia, Seila Samleang, expressed his disagreement with the reduction in sentence.
