April 15, 2009. Presentation of the book Human Rights: New Realities at the University Oberta de Catalunya
The UOC, within their activities carried out through the Campus for peace, has published a book on Human Rights, in which Asociacion Protect published an article titled Rights of Children: our future lies in the hands of children. Do not destroy it.
During the event, the authors discuss the new realities of Human Rights (UOC. 18:30. Rambla de Catalunya, 6, 3rd floor. Barcelona).
2009 is considered the year of the Rights of the Child. It has been 50 years since the Declaration on the Rights of the Child and 20 years since the Convention on the Rights of the Child, two documents which lay the foundation for the protection of all children around the world. And yet "...around 100 million children worldwide live in the street every year; landmines kill or maim 8,000; 246 million must work to survive; 126 million are forced into the worst forms of child labor; 300,000 child soldiers are fighting in 30 countries; 2 million are infected with HIV/AIDS; it is estimated that 150 million girls and 73 million boys under 18 years have been forced to have sex or have been victims of other forms of sexual exploitation and violence involving physical contact; 4 million newborns die within their first week of life; 3 million girls are at risk of genital mutilation or female circumcision; and about 29,000 children under five years (21 per minute) die every day from causes that could have been avoided..."
